Entering 9th season as head coach at Cal High in 2025-26. Coach Simonds took over a program that had back-to-back winless seasons in the Del Rio League and has been a playoff team in every season, including a quarterfinal appearance in 2019 and winning the CIF Championship in 2025. Coach Simonds was Del Rio League and CIF 4A Coach of the Year in 2025.

Before coming to Cal, Coach Simonds was head coach at Saddleback HS in Santa Ana (his alma mater) where he lead the Roadrunners for three seasons, including a CIF appearance in 2014, their first CIF appearance since 2009. He served as an assistant coach at Ocean View HS in Huntington Beach for one season (2013-14) after a 14-year run as head coach at Bethel Baptist HS in Santa Ana where he also served as Athletic Director from 2006-2013. At Bethel his teams won league championships in 2000 and 2012 and made CIF quarterfinal appearance in 2010 & 2011. He also coached girls basketball concurrently with the boys for three seasons, making the playoffs twice. 

Coach Simonds teaches social studies at Cal High after an 18-year run at Warner Middle School in Westminster, CA. His wife is also a social studies teacher, currently teaching at Capistrano Valley Christian HS. They have been married 31 years, have a 30 year old daughter (Alyssa) and two grandchildren (Izzy and Luca).
